SPIRAL: A Client-Transparent Third-Party Transfer Scheme for Network Attached Disks
نویسندگان
چکیده
Third-party transfer is a data transfer mechanism where the party initiating the transfer is neither the source nor the sink for the data. In this paper, we present a scheme for supporting third-party transfers on storage systems with network-attached disks (NADs), called SPIRAL 1. SPIRAL allows NADs to send data directly to clients without going through the server. It is transparent to clients and relies only on the linear block interface of the current disks (or the future iSCSI disks). SPIRAL requires no porting of filesystem or application-level functionality to NADs and requires only simple modifications to server applications. To illustrate our approach, we implemented a prototype system on PCs running Linux. We present experimental results for NFS and HTTP on the prototype to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

A Case for Network-Attached Secure Disks (CMU-CS-96-142)
By providing direct data transfer between storage and client, network-attached storage devices have the potential to improve scalability (by removing the server as a bottleneck) and performance (through network striping and shorter data paths). Realizing the technology’s full potential requires careful consideration across a wide range of file system, networking and security issues. To address ...

متن کاملActive Disks: A Scenario For Cost-effective Massive Data Processing
By providing direct data transfer between storage and client, networkattached storage devices have the potential to improve scalability for existing distributed file systems (by removing the server as a bottleneck) and bandwidth for parallel and distributed file systems (through network striping and more efficient data paths). Together, these advantages influence a large enough fraction of the ...
متن کاملPerformance Evaluation of Storage Systems Based on Network-Attached Disks
ÐThe emergence of network-attached disks provides the possibility of transferring data between the storage system and the client directly. This offers new possibilities in building a distributed storage system. In this paper, we examine different storage organizations based on network-attached disks and compare the performance of these systems to a traditional system. Trace-driven simulations a...
متن کاملAn Analysis of Social Network Connect Services
Social network platforms are increasingly becoming identity providers and a media for showing multiple types of activity from third-party web sites. In this article, we analyze the services provided by seven of the most popular social network platforms. Results show OAuth emerging as the authentication and authorization protocol, giving support to three types of APIs, client-side or Javascript,...
